A generalist and flexible training in applied mathematics.

The objective of this Master's degree second year is to offer a general education in applied mathematics with courses in PDE, scientific computing, probabilities and statistics while highlighting the interactions between these disciplines. More specifically, courses will be offered to highlight the fertile links between the theoretical, numerical and applied aspects on the one hand and the deterministic and random concepts and methods on the other hand. It is, moreover, a very flexible training which allows each student to orient his training according to his preferences around one of the following four typical profiles.:


  • PDE profile (theoretical and numerical aspects, applications)
  • Probabilities and statistics profile (theoretical and numerical aspects, applications)
  • Theory of PDE, Probabilites and statistics profile
  • Deterministic and stochastic numerical methods, applied statistics profile


At the end of their training students will have acquired various theoretical and / or numerical mathematical concepts and will be able to articulate them, allowing them to study physical, biological, technological models, etc ...

Various career opportunities

This training naturally opens towards a doctoral study in fundamental or applied mathematics (PhD at the university, in a company, an institute).

After this Master's degree, numerous and various professions can be considered :

  • Public research professions (CNRS, INRIA, INRA, Universities…) after a PhD
  • Mathematical engineering in companies (in R&D departments…) or institutes (CEA, EDF,  IFP Énergies nouvelles, IRSN, Institut National du Cancer, INRA, Renault,Michelin, etc…) after the Master's Degree or a PhD
  • Higher education teaching after the Master's Degree or a PhD

Fundamendal courses and specialized courses around a theme

The first semester will start with a compulsory Common Core class composed of courses in the four disciplines (Scientific Computing, PDE, Probability, Statistics) whose aim is to define a common vocabulary for all students and to strengthen the unity of this training. Next, students will take six courses among eleven fundamental course options covering all four disciplines.

In the second semester, five specialized courses covering the four disciplines and articulated around an annual theme (2018-2019: mathematics of energy, 2019-2020: mathematics of living systems, 2020-2021: mathematics for physics and environment, 2021-2022: mathematics and ecology). It is important to note that the concepts and tools developed in these courses have a general scope beyond the scope of the theme and therefore this training is also suitable for students interested in other subjects. Moreover among the specialized courses is proposed an opening class which can take different forms (a reading class, a course proposed by the Ecole Centrale Marseille or a class from another Master's degree training of the same level).

Professional development classes to help students build their project

A dynamic teaching team will be present throughout the year to support students. Especially in the PPPE class, students will work in small groups to:

  • find out about a career opportunity that interests them particularly (a research topic, a job ...)
  • acquire the necessary skills to obtain an internship or a job (writing a CV and a cover letter contextualized according to the interlocutor).

Students will present to others the results of their research which will give them an additional opportunity to train in oral communication. Students will also be encouraged to invite speakers (researchers, engineers ...) to make presentations within the framework of this class.

To complete this training, students will also follow an EU of English to facilitate their professional integration.

A research dissertation or a 4-month internship is carried out during the S4 semester in a Master's associated team, in an accredited university or CNRS laboratory, under the responsibility of a member of the Master's teaching team, in a fundamental or applied research center (CEA, INRIA, IRSN, IFP New Energies, EDF, CEMAGREF ...), or in a large company (EADS, Eurocopter, Renault ...) or an SME / SMI under the responsibility of an engineer.
The dissertation or the internship ends with the writing of a dissertation and an oral defense in front of a jury, composed of members of the pedagogical commission and the person in charge of the internship, who assigns the final grade.
